Dear Ones,

For those of you who were not aware, David is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning.

The first phone call we received today was from the surgical coordinator: "One of your test result discs is missing; without it there can be no surgery tomorrow." Yikes! Long story short (for another time), God outdid Himself, and all is in order again for what we believe will be the first surgery of the day; we await the exact time. God willing, I, Janice will be at the hospital for the duration of David's stay. The "God's Blessings" list throughout this journey now tops 140. "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not one of all His benefits." Psalm 103:2

Our prayers of gratitude are:

  1. "Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world." I John 4:4
  2. for the blessings of the "God's Blessings" list.

  1. that, God willing, David will be spared medical mishaps such as have happened repeatedly in different places and times, causing great pain and lifetime consequences;
  2. that God will guide the hands and minds of those who care for David, especially our fine surgeon
  3. that He will raise David up again to serve Him His will, in His time, in His way
  4. that HIS best plan will be accomplished in all of this.

Dear Ones,

Please accept our deep thanks for each faithful prayer for David from your lips to God's ears... as a church and as individuals. Your continuance and faithfulness truly are encouragements to us.

A very brief update follows; Lord willing the plan is:

  1. October 16: Final x-rays
  2. October 21: Pre Admission Testing at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia
  3. November 06: Surgery

There is much pain; more is predicted post-surgically. And there are several unknowns. "BUT GOD...." With David, that sweet singer of old, we request this of our Father in Heaven, " Make me to understand the way of Thy precepts: so shall I talk of Thy wondrous works."

Please keep praying.

With thanks, from your brother and sister in Christ,

David and Janice Clemens

  1. It is absolutely impossible to over-state God's magnificence! Our list of specific blessings in our present medical situation is now up to number 94. After going nowhere together except to medical commitments for seven weeks, God provided us with Blessing List Numbers 76 - 78. They included:
    1. a personal, safe, oval-shaped "walkway" in the dark (the length of two properties, under the street light, which was out front of our home; here we could hold hands, ease the pain, and not fall and cause further injury)
    2. prayers under the stars during that walk (when David just started talking to God about many great and newly learned needs from near and far away)
    3. wonderful music and memories (on our living room sofa, courtesy of the "Easy Listening" TV channel, recalling days from our shared childhood lives to the present. And all three blessings were in the same evening! It was so good...and fun...and truly designed by a gracious God!
  2. Sleep at night: the injury and brace are primarily responsible for the problem.
  3. September 17: a new CT scan was done; no head "cage" was needed (a REAL blessing)!
  4. September 19 office visit: the neurosurgeon informed us that surgery is definitely needed to deal with the injury sustained during the fall in Italy, August 11, 2014. It will involve 5 of the 7 cervical (neck) vertebrae, removing bone and/or disc, and fusing the bone at the needed levels with rods and screws.
  5. October 3: there was a successful MRI (no "mask" needed) and two kind technicians, as previously.
  6. Last, but definitely not least, God continues to grow the seeds of the Word that were shared with the campers in Holland this spring and summer during two stays in The Netherlands, and one stay in Italy. It is exciting to know and hear again that He always keeps all His promises, particularly the one in Isaiah 55:11: "So shall My word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." "God Did It stories abounded. Later. :)

  1. ...that we will be able to resume full responsibilities as soon as God's best will allows;
  2. ...for the Tuesday, October 7, office visit to the neurosurgeon and God's involvement in all decisions made by him; for successful surgery, as God wills;
  3. ...regarding the surgery date: Lord willing, we wish for surgery to be as soon as possible. The reasons are: present pain, very restrictive living while waiting, and our desire to return to scheduled future speaking commitments as the surgeon advises;
  4. …for the return of normal use of affected physical abilities in God's will/in His time;
  5. ...for God's direction for the leaders and for us in the rescheduling of meetings which had to be canceled;
  6. ...that God will be able to use all of this "journey" to help others in need, and to bring HIM honor.

Thanking you for your caring hearts and love for the spread of His Word,

David and Janice Clemens

David returned from the hospital last night after a very difficult time there. There was much confusion, many mixed messages, and not many updates.

There is much concern over his spinal cord which is pressed and bruised. There are apparently some bone fragments in addition to the three cracks within the two vertebrae. He has received new braces that he must wear 24/7 for at least 3 months. After three months, the surgeon will reevaluate his condition and make a decision regarding surgery. At this point, no definite plans can be made until swelling subsides and the amount of vertebral healing can be determined.

August 22, 2014

Yesterday, David was able to meet with one of his doctors regarding the injuries sustained while in Italy. His doctor set up additional tests, and David was admitted to the hospital.

The tests confirmed that there were indeed two vertebrae that were cracked, but it also confirmed that some ligament damage, as well as possible damage to the spinal cord were present.

Some additional tests will be required, and then surgery will follow.

As many of you know David and Janice have been ministering overseas in both The Netherlands, and most recently, Italy. While in Italy, David was walking on a rocky path, lost his footing, and fell face-first into a protruding concrete slab. The most severe consequence of the fall was that two of the vertebrae in his neck were cracked. There was no impingement on his spinal cord, and doctors were satisfied that his spine was sufficiently stabilized. He returned to the camp where he had been ministering the next day.

David and Janice were scheduled to return home 08/14, but they have delayed their flight home until at least 08/17. They are in the process of making necessary transportation arrangements, as well as attempting to make appointments with doctors in the US to better ascertain his condition.

We are grateful that this fall was not as serious as it could have been, but also need prayer for the days ahead. Thank you for standing with us.

  1. Spain dates are set: Departure - March 21; Return - April 9. This will include the annual Family Easter Conference plus ministry in surrounding churches. There are lots of unknowns on this first trip back in the saddle. Please pray us through.
  2. David's message preparations for Spain are just about completed, even with the recent drain of his strength and thoughts. I can't remember when he was done this far ahead! Janice still has lots to do (Spain, Holland).
  3. On March 9, with notes and agendas before them, our Board met around the kitchen table. Extra time was spent giving special thanks for the overwhelming working of God the whole year long. Of course, there was way too much to even begin scratching the surface, but it was fun trying. Because of their presence, our hearts were uplifted. All business was accomplished, but we hated to see them go…to a man. True kindred spirits. We are of one mind, and it is so good.
  4. There was a beyond-belief "It's the Lord" answer to our need for adequate flight seating…a rendering for another time, perhaps!

  1. the final arrival of the approximately 100 lost prayer letters sent out 1/23/12; they are somewhere in the US Postal System. Additionally, approximately 100 prayer letters which were sent as e-mail attachments failed to get through.
  2. open hearts of those at the Spanish meetings, to hear as the boy Samuel did so long ago; he said, "Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth Thee." In that verse "heareth" means to listen with the will to obey! I Samuel 3:10.
  3. us to be very full of the things God wants us to teach and be open to any editing He may want to do.
  4. protection of our home; ease for those who handle house, ministry, and mail.
  5. David's continued healing, ease in using these legs on such a long journey; comfort and sleep during travel; a doctor's visit March 19.
  6. Janice -There are significant pain issues stemming from a new area of the spine. Thankfully, the recent surgery's success remains. The surgeon prescribed a fine "advanced pain specialist." Consequently, at the hospital on Monday, March 19, there will be injections into a herniated disc deemed to be the culprit. We ask God for relief and healing if He sees fit…in His time.

February 12, 2012

Thanks to God:

  1. for, as far as we know, the resolution of our stolen credit card number. It was fraudulently used, and the resolution was a very long time coming. We are thankful for your prayers and the loyal friend who helped.

  1. God chose to delay two scheduled trips to Cuba, and He knows best. (1st trip: the Cuban government changed planned dates; 2nd trip: this surgery). Pray for the faithful Cubans, for their encouragement and growth. They'd had great expectations and had worked hard to prepare and attend. Also pray that, if God wills, He will open the way for a future return.
  2. We will have traveled to or lived at some medical treatment facility 41 times within the 59 days between December 5th and February 1st. Please pray for available time, rapid completion of office tasks, and for God to specifically direct and expedite 2012's message preparations.
  3. Pray regarding February 1st when we expect the surgeon will give guidelines for future travel. Pray for wisdom for him; for God's purposes to be accomplished at that visit, and for David's rapid recovery, if He sees fit. It's been a long haul, and the body and mind get weary. It makes for some struggling, but trusting times.
  4. Please pray for these ministry travels. Spain is scheduled for mid-March and early April; it is to include the Easter Bible Conference as well as churches in other parts of that country. Janice is to go to The Netherlands for two young mothers' conferences in late April and early May. In June and July we go together to The Netherlands for approximately 5 camp/conference weeks. September is ministry in Poland. USA Bible Conference, church ministries, etc. are to make up the rest of 2012. Lord willing, an itinerary will come to you as usual.
  5. Please pray for God's hedge of protection around this organization and ministry from any and all who would keep back the teaching of The Word of God. With some of the things that we and other Bible teaching organizations have experienced, we do wonder what lies ahead. "Father knows."

December 18, 2010

Lord willing, Janice will go into the Pennsylvania Hospital (in Philadelphia) on Monday, December 20th, at 6:30 a.m., for neurosurgery on four vertebrae of the spine. There has been an ascending amount of numbness, falling, and pain, all diagnosed as part of the same situation. Thankfully, a consulting doctor has ruled out a second surgery (hip), concluding that the pain is all from the same source.

As we understand it, the procedure involves fusion with rods, screws, and bone graft; decompressing spinal nerves; repairing damaged bones; cutting off segments of four vertebrae; a post-op back brace; and a substantial recovery time.

December 16, 2010

As you may remember, this is the time of our year at home for being put back together. This means paper and administrative work, house responsibilities, visits with family/friends, and medical needs. It's also a time of more relaxed personal and ministry study in God's Word. His supply of health for us to keep all commitments has been no small thing!

Lord willing, I (Janice) will go into the hospital on December 23rd for neurosurgery on two locations of the spine. There has been an ascending amount of numbness, falling, and pain, all diagnosed as part of this same situation. An orthopedic surgeon was also consulted to be sure a 2nd surgery (hip) is not necessary first. We should receive that answer on Monday, 12/13. God's leading in this situation has been absolutely phenomenal. We're taking it as He brings it to us, and we are content. Christmas may be very different this year, but Jesus will be there, and that is no small thing.

There is a certain press of ministry that does not go away with the ceasing of travel. There are always new and many hurting people with extremely serious situations. We have not found the "off" switch to stop thinking of/praying for them, even when they are not with us.

Please continue to pray for:

  1. David's mind to be finally free and rested
  2. Future details of all the scheduling
  3. Successful renewal of a Cuban visa and US license
  4. God's help /guidance /protection of this mission, its board members, officers, webmaster, and many others who bear great responsibilities.

Always grateful for God and for your unending care and true partnership,

David and Janice Clemens

September 9, 2010>

Please thank and give special praise to God for all that He has done in the past, per the reports in the "Recent Newsletters" section; then petition Him for the future.

  1. Tuesday, 9/7, David departed for JFK Airport in New York flying to Zambia by way of South Africa; he's due home 9/28. Please pray that the seed of GOD'S WORD THAT LIVES will fall on the good ground of soft/open/obedient hearts; that GOD'S SPIRIT will flow through David as His channel. We have received word of his safe arrival, never to be taken for granted.
  2. The Zambian Christian leaders, interpreters, and organizers need prayer. There is much wisdom, time, and effort involved in the planning and facilitating of these meetings, e.g., they must make a round trip bus trip each time they communicate using a computer. We're thankful for this devotion to God so that others might hear HIS Word, and know Him personally.
  3. Please pray for All NEEDS PHYSICAL: travel safety and sleep when he returns home; that David will not be sick during this stay from all the medications in him; that he will not be allergic to/sick from a 2nd new anti-malaria antibiotic he is to try beginning on 9/10 for 25 more days; that he'll be able to find non-reactive food. Each and every day has been planned for him to minister; it is nearly always at a different location. Pray, please, for GOD'S strength in the high temperatures and during this full itinerary…and that God will enable David to continue to keep his focus on his task of things eternal.
  4. Please pray for Janice especially during this month, a time of catch-up after nearly the entire summer away from home and desk. You can guess there's a fair amount to do…ministry-wise, and home-wise.
  5. Please refer to the "Calendar" on the Home Page for future itinerary commitments after David's return, Lord willing, on September 28, 2010.

We are continually grateful for you and grateful to God for you…those of you whom we know, and others whom we may not know. Please accept our thanks.

JUNE 28, 2010

Good afternoon,

It was wonderful to be able to write you and ask for your prayers regarding David's laryngitis and needed voice for speaking Sunday morning. Thank you for the personal and truly encouraging notes (arriving almost immediately from two of you). That was something!

Here is what happened AFTER you were contacted: by the time church began on Sunday morning, God had restored to David a soft voice. That is what he used for the entire service. They also turned up the loud speaker system volume control. Mark, the Dutch ministry director AND the interpreter, had also been sick...from Friday through Sunday. However, he was able to hear David speak loudly enough to translate and get the message out. Also, unknown to us, it was Communion Sunday, and our God had led David to include in the message some moving specifics regarding the death of Jesus. The whole experience was just a wonderful evidence of the working and gracious ways of God. THANK YOU for the part you had in all of this. (Internet is frustrating at times, but it does have its moments!! :)

With our love,

David and Janice

JUNE 26, 2010

Good morning,

It is Sunday, 3:30 a.m., and I can't sleep. We are in The Netherlands and are six hours ahead of you. God has put it in my mind to write and ask you to pray if you get this in time.

After a tremendous week of ministry and God-empowered Bible studies on the topic of "God's Testing Program" (which was very specific regarding the ways of Satan as he tries to foil God's purposes), the final session was Friday evening. Within minutes after its conclusion, David got laryngitis and lost his voice, and it has not yet returned. In fact, he just got up to take more medicine. The need? He is to leave to preach in 5 hours and 20 minutes (at our 9:15 a.m. on Sunday) Would you pray? The desire of our hearts is healing, but most of all we want His will. Feel free to share this request, and we will see what God will do.

Our love,

David and Janice
